The Best Sushi in St. Augustine

Seafood fans agree: there’s just nothing more appealing than the irresistible charm of sushi. This delectable Japanese “edible art” features a near-unending array of ingredients, styles and methods of presentation — but the end result is always just as amazing to look at as it is delicious to eat. So we thought we’d take a look at some nearby spots where aficionados of this fantastically fresh dish can find some of the best sushi in St. Augustine.

Sushi Zento & Grill

This family-owned sushi emporium is a favorite among locals and visitors alike. One taste of the absurdly fresh and flavorful fare on offer, and it’ll be readily apparent why. Hand-rolled maki and variety-packed Bento boxes share menu space with crispy tempura, savory miso soup, and “chef’s specials” (like the Happy Roll, with spicy tuna, avocado and crunchy masago). Don’t pass up the crispy gyoza dumplings when you go.

@Corner-Sushi

@Corner-Sushi adopts a slightly more progressive take on the traditional sushi formula. Purists will absolutely find classics like yellowtail, eel and tuna (prepared as sashimi, or in hand and maki rolls). But the adventurous will discover inventive combinations like the shrimp-and-jalapeño Crazy Girl Roll, the Austin Powers Roll with crab tempura, crawfish and eel sauce, and the eponymous @Corner-Sushi Roll, packed with spicy tuna, lobster and avocado.

Umai Sushi & Hibachi

Sushi fans will find plenty to love on Umai’s menu. Seared, pepper-crusted ahi tuna, the mango and spicy crab Angel Roll and chef’s choice “Love Boat” are obvious standouts from the raw side of the menu. But ignoring the hibachi would be a mistake. The classic “dinner and a show” offerings of the sizzling-hot flat top grill tables are nothing short of fantastic — and vibrantly fresh. We recommend the lobster and steak mixed grill combo.

Tank’s Sushi Bistro

Premium and uncommon ingredients are the stars at Tank’s, where the menu features specialties you won’t see on many other menus in town. Live oysters? They’re here. A sake menu deeper than the ocean? You bet. Melt-in-your-mouth fatty toro (tuna belly)? Absolutely. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, go for the geoduck — a.k.a., one of the world’s largest mollusks, sliced thin and served crudo style. It’s a rare treat.

Sakada Japanese Steak House

Sakada is a great choice for indecisive diners, as the menu features an incredibly wide variety of pan-Asian and Polynesian delicacies. Hungry diners are free to choose among specialty sushi, deliciously tender Japanese-style steak, Hawaiian poké, and Chinese-style specialties so tasty that they’ve consistently made local best-of lists. As if that weren’t enough, there’s also a full selection of hibachi plates, noodle dishes, and even desserts.

Matsukawa Sushi & Ramen

Sushi lovers won’t be in any way disappointed with the menu at Matsukawa, where flavor-packed specialties like the smoked salmon and honey sauce Dynamite Roll compete for attention with spunky fusion dishes like sushi pizza. And if you’re in the mood for traditional ramen, you’ll find the best in town here. Huge, steaming bowls of curly noodles, lean meats, and vibrant veggies combine in unforgettable and satisfying bowls of beauty.
